Just when we thought it was safe... just when we had the national ID (NID) on the ropes, for good it seemed... along came 911, and instantly changed the political landscape.
Now, if you believe some of the polls that are being cited, around 80% of Amerikans asked think a NID is a good thing, something which will increase security. Never mind the fact that many of the terrorists who turned jetliners into third-world smart bombs had legal ID... never mind the fact that the more important an ID is for conducting business, the higher the incentive to obtain it... never mind the fact that whatever the security feature on a card, there's a way around it... Never mind logic and the facts, something must be done!
Plans for a de facto NID are being pushed by a bunch of busybodies known as the AAMVA. They're the driver's license folks, and it's their wet dream gone a gusher to get the big money needed to change the disparate requirements of each state into a one-stop-shackles-all ID. Of course there must be tough biometric information on it, and of course there will be a large database of personal information stored on the card, or accessible to those who need to check the card for "official purposes". Guess what number--originally promised never to become an identifying number--will link all that information together? Yep--the Social Security Number.
The NID proposal was bad enough the last time around--and it was justifiably shot down. But this time, in the wake of 911 and the often-blind patriotic fervor that followed, the cattle are mooing contentedly at the possibility of being branded even more permanently. "It's for national security, and personal safety," they low, all the while ignoring the obvious problems with relying on an ID for security and the tightening chains of tyranny around their bodies.
Well, this is official notice that this is a moo-free zone. We are not the gummint's cattle, and we will not tolerate any attempt to be treated as such. We will not complacently go along with any scheme that allows the state further intrusion into our homes, our activities, and our privacy.
Instead, we raise our voices in protest of any NID plan or proposal. Leave us the hell alone! We simply want to be able to live our lives with dignity--with the privacy that is any individual's right, and in peace--without fear of peering eyes and the knock on the door in the middle of the night.
We're still in the process of dusting off our previous NO-NID campaign, and updating it for this battle, so please check back for more information. What we do have available now are some graphics and a sound file that we encourage everyone to use. If you have a web site, copy the graphic you like best for use on your own site to show that you, too, are not one of the government's cattle.
